We are all well aware of the recycling symbol; the three arrows forming a triangle. It is referred to as “chasing arrows” which, side note, would be a great title for a romantic comedy. But here is just a wee bit of history for Earth Month…
The symbol was designed in 1970 by USC student Gary Dean Anderson. He was paid $2500, a paltry fee for a symbol that came to define a movement. The shape was based off of M.C Escher’s Mobius Strip. This is a very interesting and mind-bending rabbit hole I invite you dive into on your own time. Originally each arrow was representative of “reduce,” “reuse,” and “recycle.'“
But now the image is really just thought of as the recycling symbol…more on that tomorrow!
